This sunset session was such a fun one to photograph. The family were visiting Scotland from the USA and wanted their photos to reflect something personal to them. They are all big fans of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, so choosing Doune Castle as the backdrop felt perfect.
I’m based near Glasgow, but I regularly travel for family sessions across Stirling and central Scotland. Location sessions like this are always about more than just the place. It’s about capturing how it felt to be there together.
A relaxed family photoshoot near Stirling

The kids were teenagers, which is a great age to photograph. Old enough to joke around and bring their own energy, but still happy to be daft with their parents. Their son in particular was full of life and kept everyone laughing.
One of my favourite moments was when their dad lifted his son upside down while the rest of the family laughed behind them. It wasn’t planned at all. Those little unscripted moments are what make family photos feel real rather than staged.
We timed the session for sunset, which gave us softer light on the castle and warmer tones across the grounds. Doune Castle works really well in the evening because the light changes quickly and adds a lovely atmosphere without needing anything complicated.
Beyond the castle, quieter moments by the water
After taking some photos with the castle in the background, we wandered down towards Ardoch Burn. It’s more of a stream than a river, and it’s a really calm spot away from the main paths.
From here, you can still see Doune Castle in the distance, which works really nicely in photos. There are also some bigger rocks by the water where people can sit, which makes it easy to slow things down and just let moments happen naturally.
The kids started throwing stones into the water, chatting and messing about, and the whole session took on a much more relaxed feel. These quieter moments are often where families drop their shoulders and stop thinking about the camera. It stops feeling like a photoshoot and starts feeling like time together.

Why Doune Castle works so well for family photography

Doune Castle is easy to walk around and doesn’t feel overwhelming, even with kids or teenagers. You can get a good variety of images without having to move far. Wide views, closer family moments, and more relaxed lifestyle style photos all work here.
For families visiting Scotland, it also adds meaning to the photos. This family loved the Monty Python connection, but even without that, the castle gives your images a strong sense of place. It becomes part of the story of your trip, not just a nice background.
If you are staying near Stirling or passing through as part of a wider trip around Scotland, this location works beautifully for a relaxed family session that still feels special.
Visiting Stirling or Doune Castle and want natural family photos while you’re here?
Stirling family photography without the awkward posing
My approach to Stirling family photography is simple. Keep things relaxed, give gentle guidance when needed, and let families be themselves. Teenagers don’t want to feel posed and little kids don’t want to be told to stand still for long. That’s fine. We work with what feels natural.
Being based near Glasgow means I photograph families all over central Scotland, including Stirling, Loch Lomond and beyond. I’ll always help you choose a location that suits your family and your plans for the day.
