This Kilchurn Castle couples photoshoot was created to celebrate a 20th wedding anniversary for Robin and Mike, who travelled from the US to experience Scotland together.
They were drawn to the character of the Highlands, especially historic locations that feel different from anywhere else. After looking through my portfolio, they were particularly interested in combining architecture and landscape, which made the area around Loch Awe a perfect fit.
We planned the session across two locations that complement each other beautifully, starting at St Conan’s Kirk before finishing with views across Kilchurn Castle.
Starting at St Conan’s Kirk
We began the session at St Conan’s Kirk, one of the most unique and atmospheric buildings in Scotland.
This location has an incredible character, with detailed stonework, archways, and hidden corners that create variety without needing to move far. It’s a place that feels timeless, which suited the anniversary theme perfectly.
Robin and Mike were relaxed from the start. They enjoyed exploring the grounds together, walking through the archways and pausing in quiet corners where the light filtered softly through the stone windows.
The setting naturally encouraged slower moments, making it easy to capture a mix of natural interactions and more intimate portraits.
Kilchurn Castle Couples Photoshoot at Loch Awe
After finishing at the kirk, we made the short drive to Kilchurn Castle, one of the most recognisable castle views in the Scottish Highlands.
The viewpoint overlooking the castle offers wide open views across Loch Awe, with the surrounding mountains forming a dramatic backdrop.
This part of the Kilchurn Castle couples photoshoot felt more open and expansive compared to the intimacy of the kirk. The change in location created a natural contrast between architecture and landscape, giving the final gallery a great sense of variety.
Robin and Mike took their time here, walking slowly along the shoreline and stopping to take in the view. These quiet moments often create the most meaningful photographs, especially during anniversary sessions.
