A Summer Family Session in One of Scotland’s Most Iconic Valleys
Three Sisters of Glencoe family photoshoot sessions are some of the most memorable experiences you can have in the Scottish Highlands. On a beautiful summer day in June, I met this lovely family of five who were visiting Scotland and wanted to capture some memories together during their trip.
With three energetic young boys, the goal for the session was simple. Keep things relaxed, have fun and let the kids enjoy the landscape while capturing a mix of natural moments and classic family photos.
We started the session at the Three Sisters of Glencoe, one of the most recognisable viewpoints in the Highlands.
Three Sisters of Glencoe Family Photoshoot

The session began at the upper viewpoint near the main car park at the Three Sisters of Glencoe. This location offers one of the most famous views in the Scottish Highlands, with dramatic mountains rising steeply above the valley floor.
Even though the viewpoint is popular with visitors, it is still possible to find quieter spots nearby. After taking a few portraits with the iconic peaks in the background, we walked further down into the valley to move away from the busiest area.
This gave the family more space to relax and enjoy the surroundings while I captured natural moments as they explored the landscape together. From here the view opens up beautifully across the valley, making it a fantastic place for both wide scenic photographs and closer family portraits.
I also managed to capture a few drone images here, which really show the scale of the valley and how impressive the landscape of Glencoe truly is.
A Perfect Summer Day in Glencoe
One of the things that made this session particularly special was the atmosphere that day. The sky was mostly cloudy, which is actually ideal for photography in the Highlands. The clouds created beautifully soft and even light across the valley, allowing us to photograph comfortably without harsh shadows.
The soft summer sun illuminated the valley and created gentle highlights across the mountainsides. Combined with the fresh green colours of June, it made the entire landscape feel vibrant and alive.
Later in the session the clouds began to pick up subtle sunset colours, adding a warm glow to the mountains and creating a beautiful atmosphere for the final part of the shoot.

Capturing Natural Moments With Three Young Boys

Photographing children, especially energetic boys, is always about finding the right balance between structure and freedom. Rather than asking them to stand still for too long, I keep the session relaxed and playful so their personalities can naturally come through in the photos.
During this session we captured a mixture of images. Some classic family portraits where everyone gathered together, but also plenty of relaxed moments where the boys could simply be themselves and enjoy the surroundings.
There were lots of smiles, a few silly moments and some great individual portraits of each of the boys as well. Capturing those relaxed portraits is not always easy with children this age, which made it even more rewarding when everything came together.
Exploring Glencoe Viewpoint
After spending time around the Three Sisters valley, we continued the session with a short drive to another beautiful location nearby, the Glencoe viewpoint.
This area offers wide open views across the valley with the dramatic mountain landscape rising behind it. The scenery here feels slightly different compared to the Three Sisters, which made it a great second stop during the session.
With plenty of open space around us, it was a perfect place to capture a mix of relaxed portraits and playful moments with the boys. Locations like this work very well for family photography because children can stay active and relaxed while still creating beautiful photographs with the Highlands as a backdrop.
By combining these two nearby locations, the session included a great variety of scenery while keeping the overall experience easy and enjoyable for the family.

Why the Three Sisters of Glencoe Are Perfect for Family Photos

The Three Sisters of Glencoe are one of the most iconic landscapes in Scotland. The steep mountains rising above the valley create an incredible sense of scale that looks stunning in photographs.
At the same time, the area is relatively easy to access. Just a short walk away from the main viewpoint you can often find quieter spots where families can enjoy the scenery without large crowds around them.
This combination of dramatic scenery and accessibility makes the Three Sisters area one of the best places in Glencoe for a relaxed family photoshoot.
